Tile laying is a meticulous job. It is not as simple as you said. Many things we think are simple at first glance, but this is not the case when we do it ourselves. The same is true for ceramic tile laying. The first thing many people will ask is should the tiles be laid thickly or thinly? So what do you think? Then come to Zhongtaojun to find out more!
1. What is thick sticker? Thin sticker?
1. Thick ceramic tiles
Thick laying of ceramic tiles is a traditional way of laying ceramic tiles. It refers to applying a certain proportion of cement mortar to the back of the ceramic tiles and the wall (floor) before paving. The thickness of the bonding material is generally 20-30mm, which is considered "thick bonding".
Thick tile laying mainly uses cement mortar as the bonding material. This laying method is also divided into "dry laying method" and "wet laying method".
The dry laying method is suitable for laying large-sized tiles, while the wet laying method is suitable for small-sized tiles. The thickness of wet paving will be relatively thin, but it is easy to produce bubbles and hollows, and the rework rate is high. Generally we will use dry laying of floor tiles and wet laying of wall tiles.
2. Thin ceramic tiles
Thin ceramic tiles are a new way of laying ceramic tiles. It mainly uses professional tile adhesive (tile glue) and tooth scraper. The tile adhesive is first scraped into stripes on the base layer of construction, and then the tiles are laid.
Thin paste is compared to thick paste. The thickness of its bonding mortar is 3~5mm, which is regarded as "thin paste".
To compare the thickness, the left side is the thickness of traditional cement mortar paving, and the right side is the thickness of tile adhesive paving. For apartments with low floor heights, thin stickers are a good choice, as they can save some space. Don’t underestimate these few centimeters. Room decoration is inherently accurate to the millimeter.
2. The difference between thick and thin stickers
1, different bonding materials
① Thick pasting method: cement mortar is the main method, and the thickness of the paving is large, which is prone to problems such as hollowing and falling off.
In fact, the thick paste method has very strict requirements for cement mortar. Whether the material ratio and dosage of cement mortar are reasonable, and whether the mixing is sufficient, all affect the final effect.
The role of cement is to provide adhesion, while sand plays a auxiliary role to prevent excessive pulling force of the cement from damaging the tiles. If there is too much sand, a sand layer will easily appear under the ceramic tiles, causing hollowing; if there is too much cement, excessive pulling force will easily cause the ceramic tiles to crack.
Cement mortar is suitable for laying ceramic bricks with a water absorption rate greater than 10% on a stable base layer.
② Thin paste method: Mainly ceramic tile adhesive, strong and not easy to crack, looks very low.
Tile adhesive, also known as ceramic tile adhesive or binder, is a new type of decoration material that replaces traditional cement yellow sand. Its appearance is not much different from cement, but its sticking performance is improved by 2-3 times.
It can be used directly by adding water, and there is no need to mix cement mortar on site. The quality standards are easy to grasp, the bonding strength is strong, and the construction efficiency is also greatly improved.
Tile adhesive is suitable for all types of base layers and has no requirements on the water absorption of the tiles.
2. Construction technology difficulty and efficiency are different
The construction technique of the thick paste method is very difficult and requires skilled workers to carry out the paving. The thin paste method is less difficult to operate and requires less technical proficiency of workers.
Based on different technical difficulties, construction efficiency will also be affected. Under the premise of ensuring quality and beauty, thick stickers can usually only be paved 8-10㎡ a day; while thin stickers can usually be paved 20㎡ a day if the base layer is leveled.
3. Different process requirements
Thick paste: The wall needs to be treated and roughened, and the tiles need to be soaked in water.
Thin paste: The requirements for wall flatness are higher, and base treatment and roughening are required, but the tiles do not need to be soaked in water.
The wall surface after roughening treatment.
3. Key points of thin film construction
1. The thin paste method requires leveling the ground
When using thin-laying floor tiles, you need to level the ground with cement mortar or self-leveling first, and then proceed after it dries.Tiling. Since the thin-laying method requires higher flatness of the base layer, some decorators find it too troublesome and time-consuming to level the floor, so they choose thick-laying methods to lay tiles.
If the master does not level the surface and just uses tile glue to lay it thinly, you must ask him to stop immediately, because this does not comply with the construction specifications and will cause the tiles to be not densely pasted and affect the appearance.
2. The key to the thin tile adhesive method is to use a toothed scraper
Different tiles use different tile adhesives, and different tile adhesives are also equipped with different toothed scrapers. According to industry standards, a tooth width of 4mm is suitable for mosaics, a tooth width of 6mm is suitable for exterior wallpaper tiles, a tooth width of 10mm is suitable for general vitrified tiles, and a tooth width of 12mm is suitable for large vitrified tiles and marble.
3. Use a toothed scraper to scrape the tile glue mortar
The purpose of this step is mainly to eliminate air and increase the contact area between the tile adhesive and the tiles.
Tile adhesive is a functional material, not a decorative material. Only if it is constructed correctly can its function be maximized.
So you see that laying ceramic tiles is a meticulous job! There is so much content on Should ceramic tiles be tiled thickly or thinly, so do you clearly distinguish the difference between the two? Don’t get too dizzy. Well, the above is what Mr. Zhongtao has shared with you. Mr. Zhongtao is leaving first!
